Introduction to Truth in Comedy
Al Neely: Welcome to ListenUp. In this episode, we explore when comedy tells the truth and why honesty matters in stand-up. I’m joined by comedian Steve Wills.
Steve Wills: Comedy started as a bucket list idea for me, but it quickly became something deeper. It helped me process life, stress, and the things happening around me.
Al Neely: Your comedy feels very honest. Where does that come from?
Steve Wills: I think it comes from life experience. Growing up in the South, serving in the Navy, and becoming a father changed how I see the world. Comedy became a way to speak truth without pretending.
Al Neely: You don’t shy away from difficult topics.
Steve Wills: No. If comedy doesn’t tell the truth, it loses its power. Even when topics are uncomfortable, honesty connects with people.
Al Neely: That authenticity is what audiences respond to.
Steve Wills: Exactly. People recognize real experiences. Comedy gives me space to talk about them honestly.
Al Neely: Steve, thank you for sharing your story and perspective.
